Meeting People in Elevators, The Pros and Cons

Is It Weird To Say Hello?
As with many social interactions, there is an upside and a downside. Making friends in an elevator is a very awkward social interaction. In fact, many people make small talk or social comments just to combat the awkwardness. This is particularly true if there are only two people in the elevator at any given time. The main question is what do you say and is it appropriate to say hello?

Should I Talk or Not?
The benefits of talking to someone in an elevator are manifold. You can make a new friend as well as share a pleasant moment. However, the fact remains that you are introducing yourself to a stranger that may not want to be bothered. Would you tap some random person on the grocery line and say hello? Just because you are a few feet away on an elevator does not mean it is an invitation to strike up a conversation. However, there are many different perspectives to consider about this situation. Nevertheless, if you feel compelled to talk, it surely does not hurt to say hello. Then again, you never know what good may come out of it.

Most elevator rides are short and uneventful. On these short rides, it is important to follow proper elevator etiquette. You should always face the doors of the car and, if you are standing near the buttons, press the button for passengers who enter the elevator after you. If the elevator is crowded, give the person next to you as much space as possible. There will be times that your elevator will open for passengers but there isn’t much room left for them. If only one passenger needs to board, make room for them. They may return the favor for you in the future.

When you see someone running for the elevator, it is customary to either push the button to hold the doors open or firmly hold the doors so that person can board the elevator. When you become known for holding the doors, other people will help you out when you are in a hurry.

Typically, the first thought that comes to mind when someone thinks of elevator music is the dreary sounds that forces most people to prefer the stairs. However, the face of elevator music has changed over the years.

Elevator music came into existence in 1922 and played the slow, easy listening tunes most people still associate with a trip in the elevator. The intention of this slow music was to relax passengers who were fearful of the ride. The calm, relaxing style most often did what it was intended to do, and it typically included jazz tunes, big band style and sometimes a little classical.

Today, elevator music has changed with the times. It tends to be a little more upbeat and almost fun. It isn’t uncommon to hear a song that has just been heard on the radio playing in an elevator. In order to achieve a calm atmosphere, companies sometimes take current, upbeat songs and add a slower melody to keep it mellow but familiar. Shopping malls, grocery stores, airports and telephone lines are also incorporating the elevator styles of music into the customers’ shopping experience. This trend is likely due, in part, to recent studies that suggest consumers purchase more items when music is playing in the background. No doubt, the future of elevator music will continue to change with the times.

The elevator is one of the most profound technological innovations of all time. It has transformed the way we live and the way we work. It has enabled cities to thrive and flourish. It is indeed one of the greatest modern conveniences of the past century, as you can get up and down, in and out of buildings more quickly. You don’t have to exert yourself. You don’t have to waste precious time in transit. You just step onto an elevator, push a button, and in a matter of seconds, you arrive at your destination floor. The full explanation can be found at http://fightorflightblog.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/mommy-fraidy-cat/ You don’t even feel a thing, except for the humming sound of the elevator, and a brief momentary shift in the elevator’s momentum as it stops and starts moving.

Many health experts cry foul, stating that elevators have caused us to become lazy and are partially responsible for the obesity epidemic and a whole host of other health problems, caused by lack of exercise. But that is not a fair conclusion to draw. If you need the exercise, go to the gym, or by all means, nobody is stopping you! Take the stairs!

Elevators have contributed to the increase in economic growth, efficiency, and better time management. The innovations that we have today would not have been possible without elevators.

Having a phobia of elevators can severely affect your life. Taking the stairs may not always be an option, especially when you are in a high-rise building. You can get over a phobia by following a few simple steps.

The first thing you must do is admit to yourself that fears and phobias are normal. Millions of adults in the United States deal with some type of phobia daily. Knowing that you are not alone should make your phobia easier to deal with.Is this new to you? Catch up here

After you have accepted that your phobia is normal, try to figure out why elevators cause you anxiety. Do you have a fear of them malfunctioning? Did you experience some kind of trauma in an elevator in the past? If you can get to the root of your fears, you are ready to move on to the final and most difficult step.

The use of exposure therapy involves simply “manning up” and dealing with your phobia head on. Phobias cause people to avoid things completely in most cases. It can take many tries for exposure therapy to be successful, but eventually your anxiety should subside allowing you to be able to ride elevators without fear.

Most importantly, be persistent. Many people give up after the first few tries because the anxiety is overwhelming.

When you’re going on a new elevator for the first time, it can be a little bit scary. How do you make sure that the elevator is safe and isn’t going to suddenly plunge to the ground? How can you make sure that you are physically safe while in the elevator?

Look At The Elevator’s Conditions

Look at the conditions of the elevator. Is the outside of the elevator in good repair? What about the inside of the elevator? If you are very nervous about traveling on the elevator, you should ask an employee about traveling inside the elevator. Some companies have certificates they keep on file to prove their elevator is safe.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Be aware of your surroundings on the elevator. Make a mental note of how many people are in there with you. Keep close to the wall or the door of the elevator. If you are female, avoid riding elevators alone with single males at night. If something makes you uncomfortable, get off the elevator.

Use Common Sense

Using common sense while on the elevator is the best way to avoid common mistakes. Listen to your gut and your feelings. If they are telling you something is wrong, something may well be wrong. The information doesn’t stop now. Keep looking: Tillotson’s Vinton Street shows just how neighborly an elevator can be

Riding an elevator is something most of us do everyday. We get on an elevator without thinking about how it works. It is a convenient way to get to other floors in a building. These tiny rooms move from floor to floor with a mechanical gear system at the top of the building. Ropes and counterweights assist in moving the elevator up and down. The mechanical equipment in each elevator is different, and weight limits must be followed. The room size of elevators vary. There are small one-person elevators in private homes. There are elevators in large buildings that may hold many more people. Some elevators are for moving freight or supplies to other floors.

The mechanical gear device and counterweights only work within certain load limits. If there is too much weight on the elevator it will not work properly. In some cases, the elevator will not function with too much weight. In other cases, the elevator may begin to work and then stop between floors. In extreme cases, the elevator could fall down too quickly inside the elevator shaft. A falling passenger elevator is a dangerous situation. There are signs inside and outside elevators stating the weight limits.
